What is OMFI?
Avid's Open Media Framework Interchange (OMFI) is a file format
designed to allow work to easily be passed between different audio,
picture and video editing systems. In the case of sweetening at
Digital One, a video sequence cut on a Avid Media Composer can
be simply translated into Pro Tools for the audio session. Some
of the many advantages of OMFI are these:
1) High Quality: The original audio material is digitized only
once (in the off-line process) and the same files go directly
to the audio session.
2) Fast: Since the audio tracks are quickly transferred digitally
from hard disk to hard disk, they don't have to be recorded in
real time.
3) Flexible: The engineer can continue working on the same sequence
the video editor left off with. Since the media is the same, cleaning
up tracks and fixing edits can mostly be done without reloading
material.
